Fire Stopping Products (Firestop Systems)

Fire stopping systems are passive fire protection solutions used to prevent the passage of fire and smoke between compartments in a building during a fire. The openings in walls and floors where electrical cables, cable trays, plastic and metal pipes, ventilation ducts and mechanical service penetrations are located are weak points through which fire can spread rapidly. Fire-stopping products used at these points expand during a fire to seal the gaps, or form a barrier resistant to high temperatures to prevent flames and smoke from passing into adjacent spaces.

These systems are designed in the form of collars, mastics, foams, mortars, boards, strips or wraps according to different application needs. Intumescent products play a critical role especially in materials such as plastic pipes that may melt during a fire and create voids; they expand under the effect of heat to completely fill the resulting gap and provide a fire-resistant seal. Stone wool-based board and coating systems allow large openings to be safely closed, while acrylic or graphite-based mastics provide smoke sealing at detail points.

Special coating and transit systems developed for cable penetrations and electrical infrastructure not only limit flame spread but also, in some applications, contribute to maintaining circuit integrity for a certain period. Fire-resistant mortars used in concrete and wall openings support structural integrity by providing both fire resistance and acoustic performance. Elastomeric spray systems used in joint and façade applications maintain fire barrier continuity by accommodating movement capability.
